We designed a modern-day piazza that is adaptable to the many daily and periodical rituals that happen in Castiglione d’Orcia. There are many ways in which rituals take place in Castiglione d’Orcia: Markets, Sports, Music, Religion, Art, Cooking, Farming, Activism, Education, Health. Each plays an important role in how society functions, by bringing people together for a variety of different reasons.
Our main design strategy is phenomenal transparency. We want one to be able to participate in a certain ritual while looking in on another, or remembering another.
We also want to put our project in the context of time and understand the different transformations that may occur over time: will our structure become a ruin? Will it go back to nature? Will it thrive, and continue to be used by people in the area in the future? Will nothing change?
